Mattress very thin and too hard.

    close to train station

uncomfortable bank beds, my 12year old daughter sleeping on the upper bank had a hard time climbing down, bathroom smelled badly, we paid for 24hours wifi, at 23.00 although we were checking out the next morning at 10.00, only to find out in the morning that due to some problems with the electricity we had no wifi access, there was a fire alarm testing at 10.00 in the morning, that scared us, only to find out later that is customary on Thursday mornings, but we werent warned about it in the previous evening when we checked in, although there was a warning sign, but who would read signs at 23.00'.

good geographical location; qualified and accessible staff; many rooms thus many people and passages : facility to meet people from everywhere.

many rooms thus many people and passages: very noisy; very average cleanliness (bathroom especially); to awake in the first makes it possible to have tepid water !

Very central, fantastic location. Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Good value for money!

Very noisy all through the night because of the bar.

The hostel had everything we needed, and was excellent

Quite loud late at night, but added to the atmosphere and we didn't really mind. Would have liked check in to be earlier or check out to be later

The hotel was very safe. I was provided with a locker in my room that I could lock all of my belongings in and there is also a convenient locker storage area that you can use prior to checking in or out. The internet is 1 pound for 20 minutes and there are plenty of computers to use. The breakfast is cheap and good and the food in the bar area was also a great value. After a long day of sight seeing the bar is an easy environment to relax and meet people from all over. The hostel is also really well located on the Royal mile between the Castle and the royal residence. I would recommend this hostel to friends and would stay here again.

The hostel is not super quiet, but it is exactly what you expect from a hostel. They only have one hair dryer and I was never able to check it out because it was always in use by someone else. While there were plenty of computers I did not like that it wouldn't allow me to use all the time I had purchased if my card ran under 5 minutes. Finally, they have a really nice charging center for ipods and phones...but one ipod charging station was broken and the other one was locked the entire time I stayed.

The only good thing about this hostel is its location.

Check-in took longer that expected. The website said check-in was at 3 P.M. We were there at 3h45 P.M., only told that our private twin room was not ready yet. There were a dozen people waiting like us (only two employees at the reception). When we finally got into our room, surprise. Instead of twin beds, there were bunk beds and one sofa in the room. No table, no chair, and no tv (not that we cared about it!!!). The shower room was smelly, there were brown stains on my sheet. The door of the room was covered with brown tape (that's room 521, so avoid it if you can!!!!). As you can expect in hostels, it was noisy. But it wasn't nice being woken up at 3 A.M. by neighbours coming back from pubs or nightclubs. All in all, a rather bad experience that I would not like to repeat. So will definitely avoid when going back to Edinburgh.

  • Group of friends

Check in took 1h30 minutes apparently due to the volume of people turning up at 15:00 (the earliest check in time they allow.) they required Photo id to check in which is not mentioned on the booking info. The room stank from the shower trap and the room definitely was not the twin we thought we were booking (two sets of bunks in this one)

  • Couple

Took over 2and half hours to be checked in to a totally different one that we booked. Bedding and towels dirty/stained.

  • Single

The location of this hotel is excellent. When you come out from the hotel you will find that yourself are already in the middle of the old city. You can walk around the city just by feet. And there is an excellent restaurant nearby. The hotel is very clean and tidy as well. It is good for backpackers who travel to Edinburgh for shot stays.

If the bed can be more comfortable that would be great. When people turns over it always makes lots of noises which influences others sleeping.

  • Older travelers

Warm dining room. Food fairly good and reasonable prices.

Sales manager (Jane?) does not answer her phone at week-end. Why give the (mobile) number if it is not answered?

  • Group of friends

Location is really good! 100 meters from the royal mile and several clubs/pubs are even closer!
